Five rules to return to
Maxims
Short enough to remember. Demanding enough to live with.
01Author or be authored.
If you don’t write your future, an algorithm will. Authorship begins with choosing what the work is for and accepting responsibility for what it becomes.
The practice
Name the part of your work whose purpose you intend to set yourself.
02Delegate the task, never the judgment.
Let the machine prepare the options. Keep the choice, the tradeoff, and the obligation to explain. A delegation line drawn in advance gives your team something they can trust.
The practice
Write one task you will delegate and the decision inside it that stays yours.
03Intelligence is abundant; responsibility is scarce.
An answer can be produced without anyone agreeing to bear its consequences. Leadership supplies the name, the commitments, and the person who will remain when the presentation is over.
The practice
Put a person’s name beside the next consequential AI-assisted decision.
04Your data is your sovereignty.
What you know, what your institution knows, and what others have entrusted to you carry obligations. Decide what may leave, where it may go, and on what terms.
The practice
List the tools that hold your work and check what each is allowed to do with it.
05Write your constitution before you choose your stack.
A tool makes a course of action possible. Your rules decide whether it is one you should take. Write those rules while you still have time to think clearly.
The practice
Set aside an hour. Write the boundaries you want to keep under pressure.
